Elephant Safehouse

Alex Sibanda is synonymous with his lifelike sculptures. This elephant was created to tell his story of how we must protect ourselves and stay home during the April month of Covid Lockdown in South Africa. Alex's home is in Matebeleland and he was not able to cross the border to take care of his family in Zimbabwe. Perhaps he imagined riding home and crossing the great Limpopo River on the back of an elephant. He has placed a Zulu hut on the elephant's backwith monkeys safely inside, just like an Indian Mahout. His elephant is carring in its trunk a curled up pangoli, protecting itself against danger and all are moving off to a safer place away from the city. Many people moved to their families in the country during lockdown as there was nowhere safer than the bush. There was a mass movement to be back in nature. Jabu Nene often paints Alex's sculptures and she added the colour to this traveling safe house!
