Victor Ntshali has sculpted these winged crane forms that surround the vase, thrown by George Manyathela. Each feather is sculpted with a matte glaze that provides a contrast to the gloss of the vase. The wings of the cranes are spread above their heads reminding one of the wings of a dancer. The young colt reaches up towards its mother, who arcs her neck down to feed him, with her or leg cradling him protectively, beautifully capturing the intimacy and nurturing energy of a mother in nature.
Mthulisi Ncube has chosen a mixture of muted greys and whites, painting the cranes in a realistic style. The vase base is an inky black that beautifully contrasts the earthy green of the reeds surrounding the cranes. Along with the vase's skirt-shaped base, a vibrant tangerine and black stripe contrast the soft blue feather design, echoing the cranes' feathers.
