King Cheetah Rider
Senzo Ntshalintshali has crafted this prowling king cheetah, guarding his family of passengers as he embarks on his travels. The family sits atop, with their young child playing between them. The addition of the pangolin symbolises the theme of sanctuary and protection, mirrored in the family unit. Another pangolin sits atop a mound of delicate flowers on the parasol re-emphasising protection and good fortune in troubled times where uncertainty exists.
Mandlenkosi Ngwenya has taken inspiration from the King Cheetah fabric design and painted the riots of pattern across the cheetah rather than painting a cheetah's patterned coat of spots. The detailed patterning on the saddle cloth in pink tones is inspired by Kente fabric from Eastern Africa and the cheetah print carries up into the women’s skirt which seems to flutter in the summer breeze.
