Thulani Mntungwa has intentionally stripped his pangolin sculpture’s tail of its scales, suggesting a metaphorical violation. In contrast, painter Relebohile Tjakata has reinstated the pangolin’s scales with a tender artistry, adorning it with intricate patterns that not only restore its aesthetic appeal, but also reclaim its intrinsic worth and value, reminiscent of embellishing a scar with a meticulously crafted tattoo.
Made by Thulani Mntungwa and painted by Relebohile Tjakata
