The Story of Wonderboy
Wonderboy Nxumalo arrived at Ardmore in 1994 where he very quickly showcased his talent and passion for art and poetry.
His anecdotes, short stories and messages of personal truths, which were incorporated into his work, resulted in an instantly recognisable style.
Wonderboy’s internationally acclaimed artworks tell the story of his life living with HIV/Aids and educate his audience through the metaphor of the monkey.
Wonderboy died in 2008, as a result of the pandemic, but his poignant life story and evocative designs live on in Ardmore Design’s The Wonderboy Range. A percentage from sales of the Wonderboy fabrics goes to his mother and a KwaZulu-Natal Aids orphanage.
Art into Design
Ardmore Design was established as an extension of Ardmore Ceramic Art, producing beautifully designed fabric, soft furnishings and lifestyle products for the home. The designs are inspired by the artworks of Ardmore Ceramics, which is known for its ornate ceramic art pieces and was established by Fée Halsted who is the creative force behind it all.
Ardmore looks to discover, develop and distribute luxury designs that will play a role in sustaining the creative lives of the continent's artistic community and feed the world's appetite for African-sourced product.
