In this striking piece, Ardmore artists Alex Sibanda and Slindile Mchunu have embraced a shift towards abstraction. The extraordinary horn of this rhino arches over the top of its body, with the tip resting almost at the rump, and is embellished with interlocking and overlapping circular forms. Suggestive of the interconnectedness of lifeforms, the design is also reminiscent of chainmail, symbolic of protecting the species against the threats of poaching that have made rhinos so vulnerable. This distinctive pattern echoes throughout the strong body of the rhino, interspersed with other scaled and feathered tessellations, and the iconic Ardmore tortoise shell design.
