Betty Ntshingila has taken inspiration from the spurfowl that scurries around the farms surrounding Ardmore. The spurfowl is sculpted with a nest of reeds on her back, and chicks around her feet. This mirrors the role of the woman in many traditional African cultures where they will collect water from the river while bearing the responsibility of caring for children and providing for their families, all with incredible grace.
Siyabonga Mabaso has chosen earthy tones that blend into the grasses that the grouse would commonly seek refuge in. The touch of rust and soft green adds a lightness to the nest.
