Ardmore's Winter School gets underway

Ardmore's Winter School gets underway

Posted by Ardmore Design on

As we celebrate Youth Day this month, it seems apt to bring you the latest on Ardmore Ceramic Art's Winter School. In its third year, the programme runs for three months from May to July and aims to uncover new talent and give a lucky few the opportunity to hone their skills and potentially gain full-time employment at Ardmore.

This year's intake of 30 students under the guidance of Fee Halsted, Wiseman Ndlovu and Megan Berning will be taught drawing, painting and sculpting, plus business, art history, marketing and finance. Fee says: "Art is not a subject taught in government schools, so I think Winter School helps to build art awareness and a value around the arts and creativity."

Many of the students come from low-income families, so developing a skill that could provide financial security is a huge opportunity. Fee has always offered the chance for those who want to train at Ardmore to do so but Winter School has now become a more formal learning experience, taking place throughout the winter months in KZN.

Ardmore's Winter School success stories include Fiso Hadebe, who has gone on to become Ardmore's top salesman; Thobani Malinga a talented painter and Phomotso Mafura who is becoming an exceptional sculptor. Nozipho Ntshanlinshali, daughter of Jabu Nene, is continuing in her mother's footsteps, carving out a wonderful career as an  Ardmore Artist. As Wiseman Ndlovu says, "It gives me great pleasure to grow more artists for Ardmore, to make Ardmore live on, when I and others are gone."

Animal Magic

Animal Magic

Posted by Ardmore Design on

This year at Maison & Objet Paris, one of the key trends was “Animal Motifs”, where animals take centre stage in design. This resonated with us at Ardmore Design, as we garner our inspiration from the flora and fauna that surrounds us in Africa. For our latest fabric range, The Zambezi Collection, we looked to the great Zambezi River and the life it supports. The result is a magical collection featuring naughty monkeys, exotic flowers and wily crocodiles: a mischievous natural wonderland. Incorporate the trend into your home with our statement Zambezi sofa, which combines large-scale elements from the new fabric range - the princely leopard and playful monkey dominating the design. Or for a more subtle nod to the trend, opt for scatter cushions to update your home with minimal effort and expense. Our cushions are now available in luxe silks and velvets - perfect for upping the glamour stakes on dark winter nights.

An African dream

An African dream

You might have noticed that we’ve turned orange at Ardmore and it’s all for a good cause. We’ve teamed up with Orange Babies, a charity whose ultimate aim is to achieve an HIV-free generation in Africa, to raise funds and awareness for their ongoing projects.

Orange Babies was established in 1999 by Senegalese creative Baba Sylla, together with top make-up artist John Kattenberg and Stef Bakker, a creative director. Working in the world of fashion and design, they felt a growing need to do something meaningful for the most vulnerable members of our society and especially in Africa.

The charity has achieved a huge amount in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It has helped more than 60,000 children infected or otherwise affected by HIV/AIDS; contributed to the reduction of mother to child transmission of HIV from 30% to below 2% in the Soweto area (3 million inhabitants) in ten years; and the South African government has adopted two Orange Babies projects and incorporated them into national programmes.

We’re thrilled to be helping them raise more funds to help Africa’s children.

Design and decor lovers are heading to Design Joburg at Sandton Convention Centre this weekend to see the leading lights in South African design. Look out for the show’s main feature presentation, Modern Conservatory, where creative directors Andrea Kleinloog and Megan Hesse want visitors to pause and engage in “the gentle absorption of the beauty of a calming and restorative space”. Sounds very much like our Joburg store...

If you find yourself at the show, make sure you stop by St Leger & Viney, stockists of The Ardmore Collection, our exquisite range of wallpapers with British firm Cole & Son.

We’re swapping the African savanna for the streets of London this month - and we hope you can join us. Ardmore Ceramics’ latest exhibition, The Savuti Dance, is running from 18th-28th May. Visit Patrick Mavros’ flagship store to see a wealth of beautiful creations, inspired by our new Zambezi fabric collection and the exquisite Cole & Son wallpaper collaboration. On show alongside the ceramics will be the fabric range - which features striking strelitzias, twisted vines, royal leopards and playful monkeys - plus cushions in silks and velvets, and our stunning limited-edition Zambezi Sofa - in London for the first time. Hand painted by Sidney Nyabeze, one of Ardmore’s artists, it’s an artwork in its own right.

We are thrilled to see our beautiful Singita wallpaper gracing the front cover of the June issue of Elle Decoration UK. A collaboration between Ardmore Ceramics and British wallpaper house Cole & Son, Singita is a dense Henri Rousseau-inspired jungle scene, with Alex Sibande’s animal travellers prowling handsomely through the vegetation. Singita and the entire Ardmore Collection of wallpapers will be on show in London this month at our new exhibition, The Savuti Dance. Join us at Patrick Mavros’ flagship London store from 18th-28th May.

The Silo Hotel Library

The Silo Hotel Library

Posted by Halsted Admin on

Nestled amongst all the splendour that is the Silo Hotel at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in the Cape Town foreshore, is their tranquil library. And within the library, is a lounge whose seats are enrobed with our velvet Monkey Bean fabric, in the Night colourway. The fabric is complementary to the contemplative mood of the library, and it’s a highlight that we’re very proud of.
