Artwork Details

Thulani Mntungwa has sculpted a magnificent pair of antelope candlestick holders, each celebrating the majesty of Africa’s great plains.

One candle features the Lord Derby eland, the largest antelope in the world and a creature that sits at the very top of many “most-wanted” lists for trophy hunters. Its massive black neck, deep dewlap, and sweeping horns create an awe-inspiring presence when seen for the first time. Accompanying it is the kudu, often called the “grey ghost of Africa.” As author Terry Wieland described, “A kudu doesn’t emerge from the bush, it materializes. It vanishes like smoke in a stiff breeze,” and no trophy is considered more impressive than the horns of a mature bull.

The second candelabra depicts the endangered roan and a sable antelope. The male sable, with its long scimitar-shaped horns, jet-black coat, and striking white facial markings, possesses a regal beauty unlike any other animal. The roan, the second-largest antelope in Africa, is equally magnificent, its long ears and distinctive facial markings giving it an unusual elegance. Both these antelope are endangered.

Painter Mthulisi Ncube has rendered the scene in glistening golds, as though the setting sun bathes the landscape in its final glow. The fauna radiates vitality and grace. The base, adorned with a tortoiseshell motif and impala lily blossoms on an ochre-brown ground, evokes the parched, poetic beauty of the
African savannah.
