Artwork Details

This striking elephant sculpture forms part of the Trunks in Trouble exhibition, a collection spotlighting the elephants of Victoria Falls, who are facing an ecological crisis caused by plastic pollution. The condition, known as plasticosis, results from the ingestion of plastic waste and causes painful internal damage.

Left in its raw, white clay, the sculpture stands as a quiet yet powerful statement. Unpainted and unadorned, it symbolises a creature untouched by pollution, a vision of health, balance, and harmony with nature.

Clinging playfully yet purposefully to the elephant’s head and trunk, a group of sculpted monkeys appears mid-action in a symbolic clean-up. They reflect both the absurdity of the crisis and the collective responsibility required to heal and protect our ecosystems. Their lively presence adds a sense of movement and energy, animating the work with a dialogue between burden and hope.

The simplicity of the clay surface draws attention to the sculptural form and intricate detail, allowing the craftsmanship to speak for itself. This piece invites quiet reflection on the fragility of wildlife while celebrating the enduring beauty of what remains untouched, unspoiled, and worth preserving.
