This November, Ardmore returns to EBONY/CURATED with "Wonderboy at Home," an exhibition that brings the Wonderboy furniture collection into a richly layered setting that celebrates the enduring artistry of Wonderboy Nxumalo.
A Legacy That Lives On
Wonderboy Nxumalo was more than an artist. He was a storyteller, poet and philosopher whose work expressed his observations on love, life and human connection. His imagery and words have become part of Ardmore's living language, continuing to inspire new interpretations long after his passing.
In Wonderboy at Home, that legacy is reimagined through furniture, ceramics, textiles and interior pieces that invite visitors to experience Ardmore as living African art. The exhibition honours Wonderboy's voice while allowing his visual world to move naturally into the spaces in which people gather, sit, reflect and live.
Three Worlds, Reimagined for the Home
At the heart of Wonderboy at Home is a collaboration with EBONY/CURATED, translating Ardmore’s distinctive artistic language into three furniture capsules: Wonderboy Wisdom, Meandering Monkey and Protea Garden.
Each piece explores a different facet of Ardmore’s visual world through furniture, fabric and pattern. Wonderboy Wisdom brings Wonderboy Nxumalo’s deeply personal imagery into the home, with floral motifs, skulls and playful sporting rabbits translated across enlarged-scale linen and velvet upholstery. Meandering Monkey draws on the much-loved Monkey Palm design, pairing its playful monkeys, palms and birds with the richer, more graphic language of Croco. Protea Garden celebrates South Africa’s national flower, bringing together botanical and bird imagery with the contrasting energy of Leopard Lights.
The result is a collection of furniture that feels less like conventional upholstery and more like an extension of the artwork itself. Each piece becomes part of a larger visual story, with colour, pattern and character carried through the furniture and into the surrounding interior.
Alongside the furniture, these stories are layered through cushions, ceramics, tapestries, blankets and fashion, creating richly considered interiors that extend Ardmore’s art beyond individual objects and into the way we live with them.
New to the Ardmore team and specialising in blanket embroidery, Thabo Motseleli has skilfully embroidered Sotho-inspired blankets with motifs drawn from Wonderboy Nxumalo’s distinctive visual language, bringing a new expression of his legacy to the collection.
